Carry-a-bag:”No more plastic bags thank you,”-Designer Sally Walton.

July 10th, 2007

Carry-a-bag:A bag with charm is one to hold onto. But a bag with a conscience? Well that should be clung to; its not often we can feel good about our over indulgent penchant for a new handbag.
Ok, so the message is familiar but the ‘no more plastic bags’ tote by Carry-a-bag is unique in every other way. Designer Sally Walton has been producing her kitsch shoppers for two years (move over Anya Hindmarch, you’re not the only one with a personal vendetta against the plazzie bag).
Made from organic and fair trade calico, plus vintage trimmings, each bag is one of a kind, a fact that will make you sob if you bought one of the now ubiquitous Hindmarch bags.
So what are you waiting for, a handbag on a mission to save the planet is your ticket to guilt free shopping!

Beauty Tips For Eyebrows

June 21st, 2007

Beauty Tips For EyebrowsYour eyebrows add strength and definition to your face. Well groomed eyebrows enhance your beauty.
You should pluck eyebrows before bedtime so any redness will disappear overnight. In shaping your eyebrows use your facial features.
Use a pair of slant edge tweezers which grip hairs easily. Comb hairs one way and then the other to remove loose hairs.
You should pluck hairs between the brows and any stragglers. Never remove the hairs from above your eyebrows.
Pluck each hair individually close to the root. Work in the direction of the growth.
Always avoid over plucking. In defining your eyebrows choose a shade similar to your natural hair colour.
When using a pencil you should apply in small, feathered strokes. Starting at the inner corner work outwards.
Blend the colour with a brush. To tame stray hairs just use hair gel and comb through to neaten.

Cider can ward off cancer and heart disease

June 14th, 2007

Cider, a beverage made from the fermented juices of apples or pears, is one of the oldest alcoholic drinks and has a 2,000-year-old tradition. It originated in Britain but is now produced wherever apple cultivation is high, like in the US, New Zealand and Australia.
Cider can ward off cancer and heart diseaseThe drink is also popular in France, Ireland and northern Spain. World over, cider sales are estimated at about 22 per cent of annual beer sales. Scientists have found that the drink contains health-boosting antioxidants and has the ability to ward off cancer, heart disease and stroke, reported the online edition of Daily Mail.
Serena Marks, a scientist at the Glasgow University said the new findings could have important implications for health and for the cider industry. She said the type of apple, exposure to light, soil composition and storage conditions all affect phenolic concentration. “Previous research suggests there may be an association between phenolics and protection against some serious diseases,” she added.
“The more information we can get about the phenolics in cider and what happens to them in the body, the more chance we have of positively influencing the phenolic content of cider, for example, by helping manufacturers chose varieties of cider apple which have naturally higher levels of phenolics” the scientist said.
United Kingdom has the highest per capita consumption, as well as the largest cider producing companies in the world. Overall, it produces about 500 million litres of cider per year.
The drink is also available in several parts of India including Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Chandigarh, Gurgaon and Rajasthan. In India, cider started as a fresh draught drink and is now available in a carbonated form.

Streamline your beauty regime!

May 22nd, 2007

Body:
1. Brush your teeth or cleanse your face while waiting for your hair conditioner to work.
Streamline your beauty regime:body2. Save time and money by doing away with expensive body exfoliators, and rather invest in a pair of exfoliating bath gloves that can be kept near the bath or in the shower.
3. An instant self-tan solution is just one spray away. Almay bare-it-all legs goes on evenly, dries in a minute and won’t come off unless you wash it off with soap and water. It’s also fabulous for hiding spider veins.
Nails:
4. Use quick-drying nail polish like L’Oréal Jet-Set Diamant, Rimmel 60 Seconds Vinyl Shine or Maybelline Express Finish.
5. If you still cannot wait for your nail polish to dry, Sharlene suggests that you give your nails a quick blast with a hairdryer, or you could try Revlon Nail Care Perfect Finish 60 Seconds Quick Dry Spray.
6. Similar to lipstick, a lighter shade of nail polish is a better choice when you’re rushing. Smudges or imperfect lines around the nails will be a lot less noticeable than in a darker colour.
7. “Topcoat will seal and protect your nail polish,” advises Sharlene, “but if you just want a quick slick of colour, it won’t hurt to skip this step.”
8. Remove nail polish in a flash with the dip-and-twist varieties of nail-polish remover. Simply stick your finger into the acetone-soaked sponge and give it a quick twist.
9. If you don’t have time to buff away ridges in your nails, just apply a smoothing base coat. Apply two coats of Yardley Flawless Nails Ridge Filler.
Hair:
Streamline your beauty regime:hair10. Use a powerful hairdryer. Hair stylist Gareth Johns says nothing less than 1 800W will do. “It’s not the heat, but the power that matters. You need a powerful blast of air to create the style you want quickly.”
11. Rescue greasy blonde hair with a shake of talcum powder to the roots. Only brush out the powder after two minutes to give it time to absorb the oil.
12. Style and blow-dry only your fringe and the face-framing strands of hair to save time. Leave the rest to dry naturally.
13. Fake a healthy gloss by smoothing a tiny drop of serum over the top section of your hair. Gareth warns, “Take care not to overdo it as you could end up with too much grease.”
14. If you regularly straighten your hair, Gareth says you can save time in the morning by doing most of it the night before. “When you wake up, just redo the top and front parts.”
15. Use the right products for your hairstyle. Wella System Professional Repair Cream 30 Seconds or Giovanni Smooth As Silk Conditioner prepare your hair, and make styling easier.

Counsel!Take your time!

May 3rd, 2007

Busy lifestyle weighing you down? Take time out to just sit back, relax and enjoy your surroundings.
Serenity Now:
Just a whiff of a fragrant aroma can instantly lift your mood on a difficult day. You can incorporate fragrance into your life in various ways, such as putting a flower on your desk or in your car. Essential oils can also lift your mood – go for ones that contain citrus and green notes. Lavender and chamomile are really relaxing.
You could also try a quick spritz of The Fountainhead Mood Upliftment Spray. It’s lightly scented with geranium oil and made with the floral essences of lavender and rosemary, and colour essences of magenta and purple.
Hot-oil skin treatment:
Cleanse your skin and open your pores with an essential-oil steam treatment. Fill a bowl or basin with boiling water and add four drops of essential oil. Mandarin and lavender essential oils are recommended for normal skin. If you have oily skin, you can use lemon or eucalyptus essential oils, which are also good if you have sinus problems or a cold. Rose and chamomile essential oils are suitable for dry skin.
Drape a towel over your head and hold your face over the hot water for two minutes, keeping approximately 30cm away from the water. Gently wipe away the moisture on your face, then apply moisturising cream. If your skin is dry, you can apply a moisturising face mask directly after the steam treatment, if you have the time.
Make the most of the minutes before you fall asleep by keeping your favourite pamper products near your bed. These minutes are often the only time busy women have to themselves, so fill a pretty box or the drawer of your bedside table with a small selection of items that are dear to you. Here are a few things that you may want to include:
-scented lip balm
-foot lotion
-body lotion
-hand cream
-a sleeping mask
-an inspirational book
-a fragrant pillow sachet (lavender aids sleep)
-scented candles.
Picnic for one:
Take an hour or two out of your busy schedule and pack a bag with your favourite food and something to drink. Take along a book that you’ve been struggling to finish, and pack a blanket and pillow. Go to an outdoor area, park or picnic spot where you can recharge and relax.
If you don’t feel safe by yourself in a public space, you could even decamp to the garden or balcony – just make the effort to get out. You’ll be surprised how much more relaxing – and cheaper – it is than going to a spa. You will be treated to your favourite food, some fresh air, and the healing powers of relaxation.
